The Form of Leaves
A world apart in quality and taste is tea which is
in loose whole leaf form. The cheapest and lowest quality grade tea is
available in tea bags and sold commercially. The crushed leaves can worsen the
taste and eliminates the healthful macronutrients.
The Labeling
Mostly, manufacturers labeled the tea with ‘premium’
quality. It this tea is really good quality? The answer should be NO. There is
common on the market to label the teas ‘exotic’ or ‘authentic’ quality. But usually
that are very low quality or with inappropriate packaging, enabling to maintain
the quality, teas.
The Location and Quality
The green tea is traditional product. It is all
history to find and improve the art of tea production. Particular types of tea
are produced in certain areas. The huge competition of producers makes us the
possibility to have high quality tea. The techniques of growing are closely
protected secret and pass from generation to generation.
The Packing and Storage
This is very important factors of good quality of
green tea. The high temperature, air (oxidation), light and other factors will downgrade
the high quality of tea. The good quality teas should be vacuum sealed and
refrigerated after production. Since the tea quality is decreased by exposure
to room temperature and light, rarely it is a good quality while sitting on a
grocery store shelves, especially if it is in glossy or glass container.
The Shelf Life
It is not long because of the method it is
processed. The green tea can’t stay green and taste good for long period. The
typical shelf life is about 6 months for unopened packages from the date of
packaging. And this time decreases to 2 – 3 months once opened.
The Appearance
The premium quality teas should have the right
appearance. The leaves can have different shapes – strings, needle shape, flat,
spiral or ball shape – depending on making processes. The high quality green
tea should be made of tender leaf tips from not more than on bud or two leaves.
The good factor is also the white fur on the back of the leaves which indicates
the freshness and youth of the tea leaves.
The Colour
This factor also varies from the types. The good
leaves can be glossily, fresh green, dark green or tinny yellow green. The low
quality tea is dull, dark, or lack of gloss in colour, its leaves are of
various stages (young and old), and it has a variety of tea shapes of body.
The specific characteristics of good quality tea should have:
A fresh aroma
A clear tea liquid
A refreshing and lingering taste
The low quality tea has:
A cloudy liquid (this look also can have young tea
leaves because of floating fur from its back so don’t confuse)
A moldy or bitter taste
Lack of freshness and flavor
Tips for buying premium grade green tea
It is quite difficult to find quality brand. You
have to know your supplier and him connections.
- Before buying bigger amount of tea, ask for samples or try small quantities.
- Compare the prices based on quality. The price is not the most important factor on the market and that doesn't mean that the product is not matured.
- Some suppliers mix limited quantity of tea leaves with cheaper ingredients. True quality doesn't need the additives to mask flavor.
I suggest ordering the whole leaf green tea. Try
to get organic tea for maximum
benefit. If you do not like the taste of this tea, try green tea supplements.
