About The Side Effects of Drinking too Much Green Tea

Green tea has lots of health benefits although sometimes it may be unsafe in rare cases. That can be related with stomach upset and constipation. Too much green tea, because of the caffeine, can cause headache, sleep problems, nervousness, diarrhea, vomiting, irritability, tremor, irregular heartbeat, heartburn, ringing in the ears, convulsions and confusion.

This drink may reduce the absorption of iron from food. The very high amount of green tea may be very dangerous or even fatal. The fatal amount of caffeine in this drink is estimated to be 10 – 14 g (in one cup is about 100 mg). So that is quite big amount.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

In small amount it is possibly safe while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. But do not drink more than 2 cups per day. Too much green tea can increase the risk of miscarriage and other negative effects. The breast milk containing caffeine can affect a baby.

Nausea

The green tea can cause nausea and upset stomach, especially if you are taking it on empty stomach as first thing in the morning. The tannins contained in green tea stimulate the stomach and secrete more acid. That’s why it is recommended to avoid this tea for those who have peptic ulcer disease. If you can’t stay off this beverage try to drink it only after meal. Putting milk into your tea can also prevent nausea, but inactive some healthy polyphenols.

Anemia (Iron Deficiency)

Drinking green tea can worsen this disease. Somebody realize that the green contain tannins that diminish the absorption of iron from the intestines, causing anemia.  To prevent the blocking iron from food, drink green tea only between meals.

Bleeding Disorders

Do not drink green tea if you have this trouble. The caffeine may raise the risk of bleeding.

Diabetes

If you have this disease but like green tea, control your blood sugar carefully. The caffeine may have an effect on your blood sugar control.

Diarrhea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The caffeine contained in green tea can worsen diarrhea and symptoms of IBS, especially if you are drinking in large amounts.

Glaucoma

The green tea may increase the pressure inside the eyes. It can last for 90 minutes.

High Blood Pressure

As a coffee the green tea may have effect in blood pressure increasing for people with high blood pressure. Although, that doesn’t seem to happen in people who frequently have beverages with caffeine. 

Liver Disease

Green tea extracts may worsen liver disease. These supplements are linked to several cases of it.

Osteoporosis (Weak Bones) 

The green tea has diuretic effect so it can flush out the calcium in the urine. If you have this disease, limit your daily amount of caffeine to less than 300 mg a day. It is about 2 – 3 cups of green tea.
